Co-ops begin return to normal operations following storm
Though a few scattered individual outages are still possible, Missouri's electric cooperatives ended the day Wednesday with eyes set on returning to normal operations. The winter storm that caused the National Weather Service to issue a first-ever blizzard warning for much of Missouri pushed completely out of the state today. With it went the concerns for massive power outages that seemed possible just 48 hours earlier.
Thankfully, temperatures plummeted fast enough for most of south-central and southeast Missouri to avoid heavy accumulations of ice that were initially predicted. While outages did occur — exceeding 6,000 co-op members at one time on Tuesday — the storm never approached the scope of devastion that gripped the same parts of Missouri two years ago.
Local crews were able to handle all repairs, and the Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives in Jefferson City did not have to enact its Emergency Assistance Procedure to coordinate outside assistance.
